Biography

John Service was born in Ayr, Scotland, and founded his first jazz band at the age of 14. He was a member of the National Wind Band of Scotland for 5 years and The National Youth Brass Band of Scotland for 2 years. He very often participated in tours and recordings with these groups.
He is also hired for numerous audio recordings and can be used for many musical styles and is always highly appreciated. He loves playing soul, funk, and pop as much as jazz, swing, and blues.

John also likes to perform regularly with his own groups. Whether for an aperitif or tea, a jazz concert or festival, a cultural concert, a dance party, a corporate party, a birthday party, a wedding, or in the background of a meal, a swinging atmosphere is guaranteed.

During his studies at Glasgow University, he played with numerous bands, including George Penman Jazzmen, Duncan Whyte's Jazzband, Tay Valley Stompers, The Uptown Shufflers, and Fionna Duncan: he was also principal trombone in the King's Theatre orchestra in Glasgow.

In 1987, he moved to Switzerland and became a member of the legendary Piccadilly Six which he currently directs.

He is a member, among others, of the Edinburgh Festival All-Stars, The Trevor Richards British New Orleans All-Stars, The Stage Dogs, Swiss Old Time Session, Blue Dogs Under, Richard Exall's Shooting Stars, The Black Bottom Stompers, New Riverside Reunion Jazz Band, Downtown Stompers Patchwork Jazz Band, and The Blue Flagships Band. He is also a member of the Swing Dance Arkestras, which accompanies the growing scene of lindy hop dancers. Occasionally, one can hear Nadejkine singing in this group, one of his passions. In 2008 and 2009, he was part of the Big Chris Barber Band. John is also a highly sought-after jazz soloist with bands and at festivals throughout Europe. He also likes to perform regularly with his group Surprise Band, The Swinging Spirits of New Orleans.
