Biography
Gabriel Zufferey studied in Geneva; from eight to sixteen at the Place Neuve Conservatory, and from twelve to fourteen at the AMR, association for jazz and improvised music.
He launched into concerts from the early age of 12.
At 14 and 15, he obtained the "best hope" prize offered by SACEM at the Martial Solal jazz piano competition of the City of Paris and the "special jury prize" at the Montreux Jazz Festival solo piano competition.
Already very young, he interpreted his own compositions and at 19 released his first album Après l'orage as a trio. Followed, a few years later, by Hear & kNow as a quartet and Contemplation, recorded solo in an isolated mountain village.
This album caught the attention of the New York City Jazz Record, and a few renowned musicians agree on the very personal quality of his music.
These three albums all received 4 stars from Jazzman/Jazzmagazine (France)
Alongside his activity as a concert performer and composer, he exercises a pedagogical activity and research in teaching.
In his current musical projects, besides incursions rooted in classical or traditional gnawa music, he continues his tributes to the music of the great pianist Bill Evans. Gabriel Zufferey reharmonizes some of his pieces and dives ever deeper into this intimate and rich universe. The concerts he offers today reflect his attachment to this immense artist.
