Biography

Born in Geneva in 1980 into a family where traditional jazz is omnipresent, he had his first experiences as a teenager with the electric bass and started a rock band with which he acquired collective experience of almost 10 years. From 1997, he switched to the double bass and cut his teeth in the field of traditional jazz within different formations and projects.
From 2005 he professionalized and completed a Bachelor's at the Bern University of the Arts (HKB). During this period, he forged important links with the scene on a national scale. He had the opportunity to tour in major festivals in Switzerland, records albums and wins prizes (Jazzpreis of the Stans Festival, Tremplin Jazz of the Montreux Festival).
From 2010 he began to tour on a European scale, recorded several albums and won the Tremplin Jazz International d’Avignon with the group Orioxy. He met Fribourg pianist Florian Favre with whom he started a long collaboration, notably as a trio. From 2013, he toured internationally, participated in the recording of several albums appearing on labels like Unit (CH) and Traumton (D) and won the prize for best bassist at the B-Jazz International Contest (B) within these projects.
From 2016, driven by a carte blanche offered by the AMR in Geneva, he formed his own quintet CHOICE with which he tours in Switzerland, he won the International B-Jazz Competition (BE) with Florian Favre Trio (Grand Prix, best interpretation, and best bassist prize). He began a long collaboration with harpist Julie Campiche with whom he tours internationally and records albums, notably on the famous German label Enja.
In 2018, he completed a Master's in jazz pedagogy at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Lausanne (HEMU) and began to intensify his teaching activity, mainly in the context of internships (Lemanic Jazz Workshop, Under the Tuscan Sun) and traditional jazz workshops (ETM, AMR).
In parallel and since his beginnings in jazz, he perpetuates regular activity within traditional style ensembles in Switzerland (The 30’s Buddies, Swing Session, Swing Project, Swing Spirit) and thematic projects (Swiss Yerba Buena Creole Rice Jazz Band, Early Harlem Swing Project, Vernier Jazz) and rubs shoulders with reference musicians like René Hagmann (his father), Jean-François Bonnel, Cecile McLaurin Salvant, Olivier Franc, Déborah and Aurélie Tropez, Nicole Rochelle, Jérôme Etcheberry or Nicolas Montier.
Within different occasional projects, he also has the opportunity to accompany musicians of international stature like Tom Harrell, New York Voices, James Morrisson, Carlos Averhoff or Ricky Ford.
